Samsun LEEP and Cervical Conization
The precursor lesions in the cervix are procedures applied for both diagnosis and treatment, in which the tissue is removed in the form of a thin cone.
What is LEEP and conization?
LEEP and conization are processes of removing a piece of tissue from the cervix in the form of a thin cone. The goal is two-way: the extracted tissue is examined in detail in pathology, clarifying the diagnosis, while at the same time removing the diseased area.
In LEEP, the tissue is removed by electrical energy passed through a thin wire ring. Conization is a more general definition that can be done with different methods, such as a knife or laser. Which method is appropriate is determined by the location, size and colposcopy findings of the lesion.
In what cases does it come up?
These procedures are planned according to the results of colposcopy and biopsy after smear and HPV tests. They are usually evaluated in the following situations:
The detection of advanced precursor lesion (high-grade change) in the biopsy
Failure of the smear result to the biopsy result
The limitations of lesion cannot be fully seen in colposcopy
In the sample taken from the cervix canal, there is a suspicious finding
If the lesion under follow-up does not recede
How is the process done?
The process usually takes a short time. One of the local, spinal, or general anesthesia options is planned based on the condition of the lesion and the person's preference. It is applied in the gynecological examination position, by imaging the cervix.
The removed tissue integrity is preserved and sent to pathology; This is important so that boundaries can be assessed. Most people do not need hospitalization.
Post-processing period
It is a condition expected to be mild bleeding and discharge in the first weeks. General recommendations:
Avoid sexual intercourse for the specified period of time
Not using tampons, not taking a vaginal shower
Staying away from the pool, sea and spa
Avoiding heavy lifting and challenging exercise
Applying without delay in case of intense bleeding, foul-smelling discharge or fever
Follow-up
When the pathology results, it is assessed whether the boundaries of the extracted tissue are clean. The follow-up intervals are determined by the result; Usually, the smear and HPV test are repeated at certain intervals.
The fact that the transaction has been processed does not mean that the follow-up is over. Monitoring of cervix health is maintained by regular checks.
For those with a pregnancy plan
The amount of tissue removed can affect the endurance of the cervix in subsequent pregnancies. Therefore, the scope of the procedure is carefully planned in people with a pregnancy plan.
Having a procedure does not prevent conception. Further monitoring of the cervix may be necessary in subsequent pregnancies; This topic is also discussed in the control examinations.

Frequently asked questions
In both, the cone-shaped tissue is removed from the cervix. LEEP uses a thin wire ring and electrical energy; Conization is a more general definition that can also be done with a knife or laser. The selection is made based on the location and size of the lesion.
